Household employers are required to deposit taxes against and file IRS Schedule H, which Wave's payroll tax payments and filings do not support. Household employers can take advantage of the great self-serve features available in Wave's payroll feature, including payroll calculations, direct deposit for employee pay, and W-2 generation at year-end, but are not able to take advantage of tax service.

Frequently asked questions

Will Wave still file for me if I don't run payroll?

If you are enrolled in payroll tax service and your payroll tax service has started, Wave will file the applicable forms listed above even if you don’t approve any payrolls. You can confirm the start date of your payroll tax service in Payroll > Taxes. If you don’t approve any payrolls with a pay day that falls within a reporting period, Wave reports $0 on the filings for that period. Remember that you’ll still need to electronically sign federal filings before Wave can file them on your behalf. You’ll receive an email as soon as your forms are ready to sign. Follow the link in the email to go to your Wave account and follow the prompts to complete the electronic signature process.

How can I check if my filings are complete?

Wave posts quarterly bundles in Payroll > Tax Forms during the final week of the month when quarterly filings are due (January, April, July, October). These bundles are for your records, and include a copy of state filings that Wave has produced on your behalf. Remember to follow the prompts in your Wave account to electronically sign federal forms.
If your return says "Applied For" we have not submitted any filing or payment and have marked the tax as paid by you. If you have received a notice when you run payroll that says "There's a problem with Wave's access to the following account" we have not submitted payment and have marked the tax as paid by you. We may have also been unable to file – in this case you should confirm the status of your state filing(s) directly with the state agency.
