[US] Ending payroll tax payments and filings with Wave

If you want to cancel Wave's automatic tax filings and payments service, open Mave, Wave’s automated chatbot, and type Stop tax filings and payments. To cancel your payroll subscription along with automatic tax filings and payments, type Cancel payroll and tax service. Wave offers the ability to temporarily pause payroll with a limited access subscription so that you can continue to take advantage of automated tax payments and filings at a reduced price. The filings and payments Wave completes when you end tax service is based on the month you submit your request. To see what filings and payments are completed, select the month below.

Ending tax service with Wave in January

For cancellation requests submitted in January, Wave:

  • Will pay taxes due on or before Jan. 31
  • Will file payroll tax forms due on or before Jan. 31
  • Will refund you for taxes withdrawn by Wave but are due after Jan. 31
  • Will not pay taxes due after Jan. 31
  • Will not complete filings due after Jan. 31 of the current year

This means Wave will complete quarter- and year-end payments and filings for the tax year that ended Dec. 31. Wave will not complete filings for the current calendar year, and only makes payments for the current calendar year if they are due on or before the end of the month.

If your business is no longer operational, you may need to contact the IRS directly to complete additional steps. This includes marking wages as final. Learn more on the IRS’s website.

Ending tax service with Wave in April, July, or October

For cancellation requests submitted in April, July, or October, Wave:

  • Will pay taxes due on or before the last day of the month
  • Will file payroll tax forms due on or before the last day of the month
  • Will refund you for taxes withdrawn by Wave but are due after the end of the month
  • Will not complete any filings or tax payments due after the end of the month

This means Wave will complete quarterly payments and filings due in the month you cancel.

Ending tax service with Wave in February, March, May, June, August, September, November, or December

For cancellation requests submitted in February, March, May, June, August, September, November, or December, Wave:

  • Will pay taxes due on or before the last day of the month
  • Will refund you for taxes withdrawn by Wave but are due after the end of the month
  • Will not pay taxes due after the end of the month
  • Will not file quarter-end or year-end forms
  • Will not close your payroll tax accounts with the IRS or state agencies
