Understand Wave’s payroll subscription

Wave’s payroll feature is a monthly subscription. With an active payroll subscription, you can pay your employees and independent contractors using direct deposit (or outside Wave), calculate and track payroll taxes, and automatically file payroll tax forms and payments.

Using Wave’s payroll feature

Wave’s payroll feature is only available on web browsers.

Once you have set up your payroll profile, Wave offers a 30-day free payroll trial. The trial period begins on the day you approve your first payroll and automatically ends after 30 days.

You can enter your credit card details at any time during your payroll trial to ensure your subscription stays active after the 30-day trial period ends. Entering your details will not end the trial early. Wave will only begin billing your card once your free trial is complete.

Once the trial is complete, you must have an active subscription to continue running payroll and to access payroll tax service and documents, or a limited-access subscription for access without the ability to run payroll.

If your business is in the US, Wave handles payment and filing of federal and state taxes on your behalf. Learn more about [US] Payroll tax payments and filings with Wave, or how to set up your payroll in Wave.

If your business is in Canada and your Automatic Tax Payments are active, Wave automatically handles your tax remittances to the CRA. Learn more about Payroll tax services in Canada, or how to set up your payroll in Wave.

Wave does not support payroll for businesses or employees located in Quebec, Canada. In Quebec, employers must remit taxes to Revenu Quebec, while Wave only calculates and remits taxes related to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Wave’s payroll accuracy guarantee

To ensure that your tax calculations are accurate, Wave has embedded a tax engine into our payroll platform. In the US, Wave has embedded Check's tax engine, while in Canada, Wave has embedded our own tax engine.

These tax engines compute your State or Provincial, Federal, and Local/District taxes automatically based on the information entered into your payroll profile.

To ensure Wave’s Payroll Accuracy Guarantee, tax tables and regulatory changes are regularly integrated to remain the most up-to-date.

Wave’s embedded tax engine calculations are highly dependent on your completed business profile, business tax rates, and your business location. Ensure that this information is accurate and up-to-date before you approve a payroll.

For more information, see our [US] Payroll Terms of Service or [Canada] Payroll Terms of Service.
