For now, tags are available to businesses that were created before January 1, 2026, do not use Wave's invoice feature, and are subscribed to Wave's Pro Plan. To subscribe to Pro, see Activate a Pro Plan subscription.
Adding a tag to a transaction allows you to track that transaction as part of a specific group within your business. This allows you to see more detailed reporting. Tags can be added to both income and expense transactions.
At this time, tags are only available on the web version of Wave.
Add a tag to a split transaction

You can add multiple tags to a transaction. To add a tag to a transaction:
- Open the Transactions page.
- Create or open a transaction.
- In the pop-up, under Tags, enter the name of your tag and select it from the dropdown menu. Or, enter a new tag name and click Add tag name.
- Click Save.
Add a tag to a split transaction
When you split a transaction, you can add tags to each different split. Each split can have multiple tags. To add a tag to a split transaction:
- Open the Transactions page.
- Create or open a transaction.
- In the pop-up, click Split transaction.
- For each split, on the right-hand side, click the three dots, then select Add tags.
- Enter your tag name and select it from the dropdown menu. Or, enter a new tag name and click Add tag name.
- Click Save.
Add a tag to a journal entry
When you create a journal entry, you can add a tag to each line item. Each line item can have multiple tags. To add a tag to a journal entry:
- Open your Transactions page.
- Create or open your journal entry.
- At the far right of the item line, click the tag icon.
- Enter your tag name and select it from the dropdown list.
- Click Save.
