If you have processed payrolls in the calendar year that you switch to Wave’s payroll feature, enter this history into Wave during your payroll setup. This will ensure accurate payroll calculations when you start running payroll in Wave.
You only need to enter your current year-to-date (YTD) amounts.

When adding your business details, you are asked if you have paid any employees this year. If you have paid people within the current calendar year, from the dropdown menu, select Yes. You will be prompted to enter your payroll history later in the setup.
If you select Yes, then do not import a payroll history, you cannot complete your payroll setup. If you have no history, select No from the dropdown menu.
Enter your payroll history into Wave
You can enter your payroll history once you have completed your pay schedule, company signatory, and tax profile.
When entering your payroll history, enter the employee portion only for taxes, Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions, Second Additional Canada Pension Plan (CPP2) contributions, and Employment Insurance (EI) premiums. Wave will automatically calculate the employer tax portion.
If your previous provider did not separate Federal and Provincial tax amounts, you can enter the combined amount into the Federal tax field.
To enter your payroll history:
- Under the Business section, to the right of Prior Payrolls, click Add history, then Okay, let’s go!
- Select the check and pay period dates in the calendar year from the applicable dropdown menu, then click Continue.
- Enter the total wages paid to each employee per quarter, the total amount withheld per tax, and any additional contributions, if applicable, then click Done.
- Review the payroll history. If there is an error, click Restart to discard the import and begin the process again.
