Frequently asked questions
When will Wave start handling my tax payments and filings?
When Wave begins handling your tax payments and filings depends on your first approved payroll paydate.
If you approve your first payroll at the beginning or in the middle of a quarter, your tax payments and filings will begin from the start of that quarter. If you approve your first payroll at the end of the quarter, but the payroll pay date is in the next quarter, your tax payments and filings will begin in the next quarter.
Tax filings and payments cannot be completed for quarters in which your business was not active with Wave.
Will Wave still file for me if I don't run payroll?
Wave will only file applicable tax forms and payments beginning from the first approved payroll pay date.
If you have approved at least one payroll in the calendar year, and do not approve further payrolls for that year, Wave reports $0 on the filings for each applicable quarter going forward.
If you don’t approve any payrolls within a calendar year based on the pay date of the pay period, Wave will not file tax forms and payments, including $0 remittances.
How can I check if my filings are complete?
Wave posts quarterly bundles in Payroll > Tax Forms during the final week of the month when quarterly filings are due (January, April, July, October). These bundles include a copy of state filings that Wave has produced on your behalf. You must then follow the prompts in your Wave account to electronically sign federal forms.
If your return says Applied For, Wave has not submitted any filings or payments, and has marked the tax as paid by you. If you see There's a problem with Wave's access to the following account when you run payroll, Wave has not submitted a payment and has marked the tax as paid by you. Wave may have also been unable to file the tax. In this case, confirm the status of your state filing(s) directly with the state agency.
Why did I receive an email from Tax1099?
Wave partners with Tax1099 to file your taxes. This means you may occasionally receive an email about your tax filing addressed from them, rather than Wave.
I have received a tax notice. What should I do?
If you receive a payroll tax notice from the IRS or the state for a period after you began using tax services with Wave, our Support Team can help. If there is a financial penalty, pay the penalty as soon as possible to avoid accruing additional fines. Provide the documentation and proof of payment to our Support Team. Upon review, if Wave is considered at fault, Wave will pay the amounts owing.
Sometimes a government agency will call you about a penalty or other notice. Wave is unable to assist until you have received the written letter from them.
