Frequently asked questions about our Check payroll partnership

What is Check?

Check is an embedded payroll provider and a trusted partner of Wave, with over half a decade of experience powering payroll and a passion for supporting small businesses.

Why is Wave partnering with Check?

Wave partnered with Check to help us offer enhanced, time-saving features, like tax service, for payroll users in all 50 US states. This means Wave can now automatically transfer tax payments and file the necessary paperwork with the state tax office and/or the IRS for all US businesses using Wave’s payroll feature.

When did changes to payroll begin?

Wave’s partnership with Check began on April 2, 2025. Since then, all eligible businesses have been migrated. If you have an active payroll account, you would have received an email notifying you of the changes for your business.

Will this impact my payroll processing?

Once you’ve agreed to the new Terms of Service, there will be no impact on your payroll processing. You won’t need to make any changes to your current schedule or approved payrolls. While the payroll process remains the same, there will be updates to some of your payroll pages.

Does Check store my data?

Your data is kept secure with Wave. Check enables Wave to run efficient and seamless payroll across all US states that also includes tax filing for both the state and federal levels. Wave will be handling all your payroll needs, while Check acts as our operating system. Please review Check’s Privacy Policy for more information.

Is the price changing?

Yes, if you were previously in a non-tax service state. The base price will not change for states that already had access to our tax service, and will only increase for states that now have access to our tax service.

Prior to April 2, 2025, our tax service was not available in all US states. The base rate was higher in states with tax services because Wave automatically transferred tax payments and filed the necessary paperwork with the state tax office and/or the IRS. Now, Wave offers our tax service in all 50 US states, meaning the price is the same for all states. You can learn more in Wave's full-access payroll subscription pricing.

What happens if I want to do my taxes myself?

There is no self-serve option for tax filings and payments with Wave. Wave will handle the tax filing and payments on your behalf. There is currently no option to turn this off. You can cancel your payroll subscription at any time if you no longer want Wave to handle tax services for your business.

What happens to my current outstanding tax payments?

Until your business migrates, continue to make tax payments as usual. Wave will send an email to notify you when automatic payroll tax payments and filing will begin. If you are currently making your own tax payments, any payments before this date are your responsibility.

What happens if I don’t agree to the new payroll Terms of Service?

We are required by law to have new Terms of Service for our payroll service due to our new partnership. You will not be able to use Wave’s payroll feature without agreeing to the new terms.

How do I know if Wave has paused my payroll?

If you didn’t agree to the new Terms of Service, your payroll subscription was paused. Wave sent an email, with the subject line Action required: Resume payroll runs, to notify all users whose payroll subscriptions were paused. It also contains the steps you must take to resume payroll.

What payroll information will I be able to see if my subscription is paused?

If you have not run any payrolls, Wave will delete any data on file, and you will need to complete the payroll setup to use the feature. If you have run a payroll in Wave, as Wave paused your payroll subscription, you'll still be able to access the following information without an active subscription:

  • Employee data
  • Timesheets
  • Taxes
  • Payroll reports
  • Payroll transactions
  • Previously approved payrolls

If you had previously approved payrolls in Wave and are unable to locate them, contact our Support Team. Open Mave, Wave's automated chatbot, and type legacy view past payrolls.

If you cancelled Wave Payroll in 2025, Wave will not be able to generate year-end forms on your behalf. You will need to generate your tax forms for 2025 outside of Wave.

Can I use payroll again in the future?

If you had an active subscription that was paused by Wave on June 25, or you have not run any payrolls in Wave, you can reactivate or resume payroll and sign the new terms at any time.

I want to cancel payroll. What should I do before canceling?

If you have an already approved payroll, wait until the payroll is completed or cancel the approved payroll. Then, download your tax forms and any other necessary payroll information, as you need to have an active payroll subscription to do so. Learn how to cancel your payroll subscription.
